Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What is Medicare and who is eligible?
Medicare is a federal health insurance program primarily for individuals aged 65 and older, as well as certain younger individuals with disabilities or specific medical conditions. Eligibility is based on age, disability status, or medical qualifications such as End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) or ALS.

Medicare consists of:

  • Medicare Part A – Covers hospital stays, skilled nursing facility care, and some home healthcare services.
  • Medicare Part B – Covers doctor visits, outpatient care, preventive services, and medical supplies.
  • Medicare Part C (Medicare Advantage) – Offers an alternative to Original Medicare, including additional benefits like dental, vision, and prescription drug coverage.
  • Medicare Part D – Provides prescription drug coverage to help lower medication costs.
Most people are automatically enrolled in Medicare Part A and Part B when they turn 65 if they are receiving Social Security benefits. If you need to enroll manually, you can do so through the Social Security Administration’s website or by visiting a local office.
Original Medicare (Parts A & B) is provided by the government and allows you to see any doctor that accepts Medicare. Medicare Advantage (Part C) is offered by private insurance companies and often includes additional benefits like dental, vision, and prescription drug coverage.
A Medicare Supplement plan helps cover out-of-pocket expenses such as deductibles, copayments, and coinsurance not covered by Original Medicare. If you want additional financial protection, a Medigap plan may be a good option.

You can make changes to your Medicare coverage during:

  • Annual Enrollment Period (AEP): October 15 – December 7, when you can switch or enroll in a new plan.
  • Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment: January 1 – March 31, for those who want to switch Medicare Advantage plans.
  • Special Enrollment Periods (SEP): Available for qualifying life events such as moving to a new area or losing other coverage.
Medicare Part A is usually free for individuals who have worked and paid Medicare taxes for at least 10 years. Medicare Part B, Part C, and Part D require monthly premiums, and costs may vary based on income and plan selection.
